International Masterclass for Orchestral Conducting directed by Maestro Yoel Levi - France

The Haifa School for Advanced Music Studies

The Haifa Symphony Orchestra
Music Director: Noam Sheriff

International Master classes for Orchestral Conducting

With Maestro Yoel Levi
Piano, Alon Goldstein

November 13th – 19th 2011

Description

The Yoel Levi master class in Haifa has been uniquely designed for the "creative conductor" The philosophy being that an outstanding conductor does not merely regenerate the great works of the past but finds within himself the "spirit" of creation. Indeed, the great conductors through the years have been composers. Examples are: Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Leonard Bernstein, and Pierre Boulez. It is our intention to create a unique experience. This will combine superlative conducting training with Maestro Yoel Levi and in-depth discussion and research into the creation of a musical work, from the seed of an idea, through its formation, orchestration and finally performance.

The participants will have approximately 23 hours of rehearsal time with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra. There will be conducting discussions and lectures given by Maestro Yoel Levi, Maestro Sheriff & Dr. Amnon Palti. Leading Piano musician Alon Goldstein will also be accompanying the masterclass sessions. In addition, there will be enrichment activities and tours of local sites. A number of participants will be chosen to conduct the HSO in a gala concert at the end of the course.

reading new music charts of arranging students

The Haifa Big Band will be participating in a joint project with the Rubin Academy of Music, Jerusalem, in reading new music charts of arranging students. The project was the brain-child of Dr. Arnon Palty, who teaches jazz arranging and composition at the academy.

The Big Band and its musical director, Jeffrey Howard, will read ten newly-written arrangements from students in Dr. Palty's class. The arrangements are written in a variety of jazz styles and set for the traditional instrumentation of saxophones, trombones, trumpets and rhythm section.

The Haifa Big Band has collaborated with Dr. Palty in the past, most notably performing the world premier of his composition “Eten Bamidbar” Europe's largest jazz festival in Mannheim, Germany in October of 2009.

The public is invited to attend.

Eines adds "I invite all residents of Haifa and the Krayot to enjoy a fabulous season, in which first-rate conductors and soloists will appear. We intend to present to the audience pre-classic pieces, less-renowned pieces, contemporary classical music and also Israeli pieces throughout the times."

Amongst the roles Eines has filled in the past: founding and managing the Kiryat Yam Conservatory, Chairman of the Eitan society - the Israeli Association for Youth Bands, founder and conductor of the Representation Blowers Orchestra, conductor of a concert at the United Nations Headquarters for the former UN representative for Israel, Mr. Dani Gilerman, and different musical and managerial roles at different orchestras across Israel.
